From Toast Box to Nanyang
Many were surprised to hear one of the most devastating news of 2018 - Toast Box is closing down. Our favorite kaya toast, coffee, and other dishes I haven't even tried from Toast Box are no longer within our reach.
Not long after I hear this news, an assurance came that Toast Box will indeed shut down operations, but only to reopen months after under a new name, and that is "Nanyang".

Nanyang is esentially Toast Box under a different name. Their menu, their shops' ambiance, and even the locations of their branches remain the same under Nanyang.
I really love their kaya toast, but since I have a lot I haven't tried from their menu, I decided to skip the toast and just go for their meals.
Hainanese Chicken Rice P268 |
I was really looking forward to the Hainanese Chicken Rice from Nanyang, and I'm glad it didn't disappoint. The chicken tasted light and gingery as expected, and goes well with the sauces.
Prawn Laksa P268 |
The prawn laksa is one of the most popular dishes from Nanyang. And since I haven't had laksa in a long time, I figured I could also give it a try. It also tasted good. It had a level of spice that complements the coconut cream.
Homemade Nasi Lemak P238 |
I was looking forward to the nasi lemak because I've never had a bad one in my life. But as they say, there's always a first time for everything. It's not awful, it was just lacking. I didn't get the distinct taste that makes truly a nasi lemak. It was just rice with crispy chicken, egg, dried fish, and peanuts.
Curry Chicken with Rice P248 |
Lastly, we ordered the curry chicken with rice, which is the plainest, most boring and common-tasting dish we had from Nanyang. It's a typical chicken curry with potatoes that weren't done cooking.
Our dinner went well. Not as good as we had hoped, but satisfying enough. Service was a bit slow, but friendly. There were a lot of customers, and I think they were a bit short on their staff, so for them to be friendly despite all those orders and customers to serve, I have nothing but praises for them.
