This Japanese Cafe in BGC Serves Legit Matcha Desserts and Drinks
It seems that the ever favorite matcha from Japan has found itself in a tight competition with the come back of the milk tea craze in the Philippines.
And while everyone was waiting to get their hands on a cup of milk tea from a newly opened place around BGC, my sister and I decided to go discover something different.
Nomi, which means "drink" in Japanese, is a modern Japanese cafe that opened in Manila this year. This cafe hopes to empower the world with good food and good vibes through offering delicious food made from quality ingredients.
It's a cafe best known for their matcha offerings, apart from their cute and incredibly instagrammable interiors. Don't you just love the ambiance of this cafe? Because we do!
At first I was very skeptical about having our lunch here since the food looked mediocre on photos. It's a good thing I don't listen to my judgemental self sometimes, because I almost missed the chance to have a good dining experience with Nomi.
Salmon Aburi Power Bowl P360 |
The salmon aburi power bowl has white rice topped with torched salmon, chopped cucumbers and roasted carrots, toasted sesame seeds, and finished with a drizzle of ginger miso dressing. I sure loved the perfectly torched salmon - cooked on the outside, but soft and juicy on the inside. It also goes so well with the light ginger miso dressing that complements the freshness of the salmon.
Havana Cubana Power Bowl P290 |
My sister ordered the havana cubana power bowl since she's feeling like eating something with a touch of Mexican cuisine. It's a bowl with pulled braised pork shoulder, sweet corn, kidney beans, chopped lettuce, lime, cilantro, and finished off with some pico de gallo dressing. She did enjoy every bite of it.
Gyudon P350 |
We also tried one of their best sellers - the gyudon, which seemed like any well cooked gyudon from our favorite Japanese restaurants. The beef slices were thin, flavorful, and really tender. You can't go wrong with this classic dish.
Curry Rice (Pork) P330 |
Lastly, to complete spoiling ourselves at Nomi Cafe, we had an order of the curry rice. We were made to choose between the meats available - chicken, pork, or shrimp. Out of everything we had, it was the item that didn't impress us that much, although it also wasn't terrible.
Tea-ramisu Dream P180 |
What's my visit to Nomi without trying one of their most popular matcha dessert? The tea-ramisu dream is an iconic matcha tea-tearamisu dessert inspired by Kyoto desserts. It's like a cake made with layers of matcha sponge cake and cream, with the former having a texture that's as if it was soaked in some light syrup. I was expecting something denser than this, which probably explains why I did not fall in love with this dessert.
Matcha Surprise P170 |
The matcha surprise, as the name suggests, is a drink that has a surprising combination of matcha and watermelon, which I thought would work perfectly if executed right, and so I ordered one. It did not meet my expectations. However, I did like the strong, bitter taste of Nomi's matcha. It was just too strong that it overpowered the light and fruity taste of the watermelon, instead of just complementing it.
So if you're looking for a nice, quiet place to meet up a friend or treat yourself, better keep Nomi Cafe in mind.
