Michelin Star Ramen Taste Test: Tsuta Ramen

by - Monday, February 26, 2018

I was supposed to visit Tsuta Ramen in BGC in mid-December, but because of a conflict in my schedule, I was forced to try it much later.

I've been reading a lot of mixed reviews about Tsuta ramen, which made me so scared about spending some time and money here. But being the foodie that I am who believes in restaurants, I came to try it 2 months later.

Ajitama Miso Soba P450
I heard that Tsuta's miso ramen is the richer of the 3 types of ramen they offer, so I had their ajitama miso soba. It's a bowl of their own soba noodles with char siu (1 slice), flavoured egg, red onion, bean sprouts, hot sauce, porcini mushroom oil and watercress. On my first few slurps, I was able to appreciate the flavor of this ramen. But mid-way through the bowl I got a little tired of the taste and found it a little salty.

The soba was also really different from the noodles of the other ramen joints I've tried, as it isn't too thin nor too thick.

One thing I would definitely advise to people who would want to try Tsuta Ramen is to order their flavoured egg! I swear the egg tasted amazing. You would also think that their bowl is shallow, but don't let it deceive you as an order was also hard to finish.

Niku Meshi P180
My boyfriend ordered their niku meshi. It's chunks of peppered pork on top of white rice. It didn't look like much, but it was done right. The pork was tender and flavorful.

I guess I get where people are coming from with all the negative reviews. The flavors were there, but I think it's people's unrealistic expectations that greatly influenced their experience. At the end, it still boils down to our own personal preferences. For me, I liked the execution of the miso soba. It's a healthier, lighter offering of ramen, but I still prefer my usual ramen with tonkotsu broth.

My Scores:
Pricing - 3/5
Service - 4/5
Ambiance - 4/5
Taste - 3.5/5
